The Six of Swords: Today's Tea and Tarot Blog

The Six of Swords

Journey. Transition. Passage from Rough Times to Smooth.

Opening Beanblossom’s Tea and Tarot was a passage through the underworld. Murder. Mayhem. Misunderstandings and mistakes. (No, I wasn’t kidding about the murder. We found a dead body behind the tearoom. Don’t ask.) It felt like we’d never get Beanblossom’s open.

I’m not sure how I got through it. Actually, I do know. The Six of Swords card got me through. This Tarot card gave me hope and let me know the rough times would end.

In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, the Six of Swords shows a huddled woman and child being ferried across a body of water. On one side of the boat, the water is rough. On the far side of the boat, the water is smooth. Six swords stand upright in the boat. The woman looks through the cluster of swords. Worried thoughts are front of mind.

But she’s moving into smooth waters. The big question is, are the swords making leaks in the boat? How much trouble will our own anxieties create as we work through problems? Odds are, they’re not helpful.

Fortunately, the ferryman has got his eyes on the far shore and is paddling steady toward it. How can we get out of our heads and be the ferryman, pushing forward, eyes on the prize, rather than sunk in worry?

These are all excellent discussion or self-reflection questions when this card turns up. And keep in mind, this is a card of hope. Have faith you’re moving toward better things, because you are.

FYI, there were a few more bumps along the road to Beanblossom’s, but we’re in a good groove now. Plus I get all the scones I can eat.
