What if the secret to tapping into psychic powers, or ESP, was simply curiosity?

It sounds almost too simple, but hear me out.

I’m Kirsten Weiss, author of the Mystery School series and the upcoming book Whispers of the Witch. In my work, including the UnTarot app that accompanies the series, curiosity is a core concept — a muscle we can build and flex to open doors to deeper perception and magical thinking.

Curiosity is not just a casual interest or a fleeting impulse. It’s a powerful force that protects us from falling into ideology traps or blindly following gurus. When the mind is curious, it is always asking questions like “why?” and “how?” — digging beneath the surface to uncover truth. This constant questioning keeps us sharp and less likely to be fooled.

Why Curiosity Matters More Than You Think

Curiosity propels us toward adventure, and adventure is essential for growth.

Without new experiences or fresh ideas tickling our brains, we stagnate. We can’t change if we keep doing the same old things over and over. Even if change comes easily to you, without novelty, what are you really changing into?

Think of curiosity as the spark that lights the fire of transformation.

But here’s the twist: curiosity also seems to be a key ingredient in supernatural abilities like ESP — extrasensory perception.

ESP Experiments and the Curious Mind

In the fascinating book New Frontiers of the Mind by J.B. Rhine, there’s a description of early ESP experiments at Harvard using Zener cards — those cards with wavy lines, stars, circles, and squares.

Rhine emphasized that the success of these experiments was not just about the cards themselves but about how the tests were conducted.

“Before any card calling was attempted, every effort was made to interest the subject in the work. I explained the purpose of the test and how the cards were used. The atmosphere was as informal and as friendly as I could make it.”
“Far more important than the cards themselves, I believe, was the way in which the tests were conducted. Not what was done, but the way in which it was done contributed most to the results.”
“The cards did not develop a new faculty of the mind. They merely recorded an existing faculty in a simple, practical way. The atmosphere, which led the subjects to an eager and interested frame of mind, was the vital factor.”

Rhine didn’t explicitly use the word curiosity, but that’s exactly what he was describing — getting the subjects genuinely interested, engaged, and curious.

Personal Experience: Curiosity in Action

I’ve seen this firsthand.

Recently, my boyfriend and I took a class in psychometry — the art of reading energy from objects.

He knocked it out of the park, and when I asked how, he said the key was curiosity.

He would hold an object and let go of any preconceptions about it. Then, he’d watch what images or impressions came up and ask himself, “What else?”

If nothing new appeared, he let that idea go and waited for the next one. But when a fresh image or idea rose in response to his inquiry, he’d keep asking questions and follow where it led.

This curious, open-minded approach allowed him to dive deeper and access information that might otherwise have been blocked by assumptions or fear.

Curiosity and Tarot Reading

I do the same thing when I do tarot readings.

Instead of coming in with fixed ideas about the person or the question, I let go of preconceptions and get curious about what the cards are showing me.

When cards present similar or supporting messages — those moments really grab my attention.

I follow those threads, digging in to see where the story goes, while still noting the “random” cards that seem to hang out on the edges.

This method of inquiry, guided by curiosity, is where the magic happens.

What Stops Us From Being Curious?

Unfortunately, fear often dulls our curiosity.

Fear of looking foolish or asking the “wrong” questions can keep us from exploring further.

Technology doesn’t always help either.

It’s all too easy to accept the first answer we find on the Internet or from AI like ChatGPT.

That quick satisfaction might quench our curiosity, but it rarely encourages deeper questioning.

We don’t stop to ask, “Is this true? How? Why?” and so we can end up fooled or misled.

Building Your Curiosity Muscle: Five Questions to Ask Yourself

If you want to grow your curiosity — and maybe unlock some hidden psychic abilities — try these five questions:

  1. What types of situations tend to dull my curiosity?

Notice when you stop asking questions or lose interest. Is it fear, distraction, or something else?

  2. What fascinates me?

What could absorb your attention for hours? Follow that fascination wherever it leads.

  3. Why is this attracting my curiosity?

Is it fun? Mysterious? Challenging? Understanding your “why” can deepen your engagement.

  4. What mysteries fascinate me?

Whether it’s the unknown in the physical world or the secrets of the mind, lean into what intrigues you most.

  5. What if…?

Finish this sentence with something ridiculous or outrageous. Let your imagination roam free and see where curiosity takes you.

The Mystery Schools and the Magic of Curiosity

The mystery schools of old weren’t about teaching magic tricks or spells.

They were about teaching people how to be magical — how to think magically and cultivate the mindset that opens the door to the unseen and the unknown.

Curiosity was one of the key tools they used to help people build their magical muscles.

It is a skill, a way of being, that anyone can develop.

Final Thoughts: Embrace Curiosity and Unlock Your Potential

Curiosity is more than a personality trait or a passing interest.

It’s a vital ingredient in exploring the mystery of life, the universe, and even psychic abilities.

When you cultivate curiosity, you open yourself to new experiences, challenge old beliefs, and gain access to deeper insights.

Whether you’re reading tarot cards, practicing psychometry, or simply navigating your daily life, curiosity can be your guide and protector.

So go ahead — chase those questions, follow your fascinations, and don’t be afraid to ask “what if?” even if the answer seems outrageous.

The mystery is waiting for you.
