Riga Hayworth and Crystal Magic

I have a lot of crystals lying around the house. They're pretty, and I confess to some superstition surrounding crystals. Also, I'm constantly turning up pieces of clear quartz in my yard. Like a magpie, I can't just let them lay there.

Gems and crystals are also a big part of current magical practices. So of course, I had to include them in my Riga Hayworth novels. In The Hermetic Detective, Riga describes creating wards using a naturally broken piece of obsidian.

In magical theory, crystals can not only be used to protect you from outside sources and negative energies. Below is a list of four crystals with protective properties. Riga harnesses these crystals energies by holding them in her hand during meditation and by wearing them throughout the day (and making wards).

1. Hematite: This crystal's grounding and balancing energies can be used during a transitional or transformational period of life. Hematite is represented by the element Earth, the zodiac signs of Aquarius and Leo and by the Root Chakra.

2. Black Onyx: This crystal can be used for manifesting strength and self-confidence, two tools useful in protecting yourself. In magic, black is a protective and grounding color. The stone is represented by the element of Earth, the Zodiac signs Gemini and Scorpio, and the Root Chakra.

3. Malachite: This crystal repels negative energy--both external or internal. Malachite is represented by the element of water, the zodiac signs Taurus and Scorpio, and the Heart Chakra.

4. Amethyst: Amethyst is one of the best crystals for psychic protection. It has stabilizing and balancing properties and can be used to take care of both your emotional and spiritual well being. Use this crystal to help clear irrational, negative, or anxious thoughts. It resonates with both the Third Eye and Crown Chakra. It can be especially powerful for those born under the signs of Virgo, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
